There is a window, not one perfect week

If you are wondering when to schedule maternity photos, the honest answer is that there is a window, not one perfect week that works for everyone.

You want your belly to feel beautifully round and noticeable, but you also want to be comfortable enough to move around and enjoy yourself. For many people, that puts the session somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks. That is a helpful place to start, but it is not a rule I expect every family or every pregnancy to follow.

Start with how you want the session to feel

Some people want to celebrate the last stretch of pregnancy when their belly is at its fullest. Others would rather take photos a little earlier while walking, sitting and changing positions still feel easier. Neither choice is wrong.

When we pick a date, I care more about how you expect to feel than landing on a particular week just because the internet says it is the right one. If your pregnancy needs a little more flexibility, we can plan around that too. Your doctor or midwife should always guide any health or activity decisions. My job is to make the photography part feel manageable.

Fort Worth weather matters more than people think

A summer due date can put the usual maternity-photo window right in the middle of serious Texas heat. That does not mean you have to give up on outdoor photos. We may choose a date a little earlier, meet close to sunset or use a location that does not require much walking.

An in-home session is also an option if being outside sounds miserable. You do not need a perfect house for that. We can use the rooms with the best light, move a small distraction if we need to and make something that feels personal to this season of your life.

During cooler months, sunset comes earlier than many families expect. If a partner is coming from work or older children are joining us, we need to look at the actual sunset time before choosing the session date.

If older children are coming

The best time for the light is not always the best time for a toddler. I would rather choose a plan that gives your child a fair chance to be themselves than insist on a beautiful location at a time when they are usually exhausted.

That may mean choosing a place close to home or keeping the walk short. Once we are there, I am not expecting little kids to stand still and cooperate like tiny adults. If they want to explore for a minute, we can let that become part of the session.

What if the weather changes or the baby has other plans?

Pregnancy is not especially interested in our calendars, and Texas weather is not much better.

If the forecast becomes unsafe or genuinely miserable, we will talk about the options. We may adjust the time, move the session or choose an indoor plan. If your baby arrives before the maternity session, please do not worry about disappointing me. We will figure out what makes sense from there.

This is one reason I recommend reaching out before you are ready to take the photos. We can reserve room on the calendar and make the final plan with enough time to be thoughtful about it.

So, when should you reach out?

You do not have to wait until your belly looks photo-ready to contact me. Reaching out during the second trimester usually gives us more choices for dates and locations. The session itself can still happen later.

If you are already past that point, reach out anyway. I never want someone to assume they missed their chance because they did not book at exactly the right week.
