You do not have to dress like somebody else's maternity photos

It is really easy to start looking for maternity-photo outfits and suddenly feel like you are shopping for a costume. There are beautiful gowns everywhere, and they photograph beautifully, but that does not mean you have to wear one.

The best place to start is with what already feels like you. That may be a long dress that moves in the wind. It may be jeans with a sweater or a simple top that shows your belly. You should still recognize yourself when you look back at these photographs.

Comfort changes the way photographs feel

If something pinches, slips or needs to be adjusted every thirty seconds, it is going to be hard to forget about the outfit and settle into the session. Pregnancy already comes with enough physical negotiation.

Try your outfit on before the day of the session. Sit down in it. Walk around. Raise your arms and make sure you can move without worrying about what the fabric is doing. You do not need to choose the loosest thing you own, but you do need to be able to breathe and move comfortably.

Think about movement, not just how it looks standing still

I will photograph you walking and sitting. You may be leaning into your partner or moving with your children. Fabric with a little movement can add something beautiful to those moments, but a fitted outfit can work just as well when it makes you feel good.

Long dresses are lovely in an open field, especially when there is a little wind. They are not the only answer. A more casual outfit can make the photographs feel intimate and familiar, which may be exactly what you want.

Choosing colors for an outdoor Fort Worth session

You do not need everyone to match. I would rather see colors that feel like they belong together while still letting each person look like themselves.

Earthy colors work well in many of the outdoor places where I photograph, but the season and location matter. Deep green can disappear into a very green summer background. Pale fabric can become see-through in strong backlight. Tiny patterns sometimes look much busier in a photograph than they do in the mirror.

If you are stuck between a few options, send them to me. I am happy to help you think through how they will look with the location and the people joining you.

If your partner or children are joining you

Choose your outfit first, then build around it. They do not need to wear the same color as you. Pulling one or two colors from your outfit is usually enough to make everything feel connected.

For children, make sure they can move in what they are wearing. If a child hates stiff fabric or a particular pair of shoes, the session is not the best time to hope they will suddenly stop noticing it.

Texas heat gets a vote

A beautiful heavy dress may feel completely different after ten minutes outside in August. If your session falls during the warmer part of the year, lighter fabric and fewer layers can make the evening much easier.

We can also talk about meeting later, choosing a place with less walking or doing the session at home. The outfit should work with the real plan, not an imaginary version of Texas weather.

Bring the version of yourself you want to remember

Your maternity photographs do not have to look formal unless that is what you want. They can be playful. They can be quiet. They can look like the person you are right now with the people you love around you.
