You booked your fall family photo session (yay!) and now… the group text with your spouse is 47 screenshots deep with “What about this sweater?” and no actual decisions made.

I get it. Outfits are the part that can trip people up the most. The good news is that it really can be simple, and you do not have to overthink it. Here is my go-to approach for putting together looks that photograph beautifully here in Fort Worth in the fall.

Stick to 3 or 4 colors

A good color palette keeps your photos looking pulled together without feeling stiff. I like to start with one or two main colors, then sprinkle in a couple of accent shades. For example, earthy neutrals with a hint of rust, or deep blues with soft creams and a touch of sage. When you stick to just a few colors your family looks like you belong together.

Mix textures instead of patterns

This is not a hard and fast rule. Sometimes patterns mixed intentionally can really make a statement. However, I suggest if you are just looking for a simple way to create a cohesive look for your family without having to be a fashion and pattern expert to try to mix textures instead of patterns to give a less flat look. Think of mixing in things like sherpa, chunky knit, corduroy, silk, or velvet to mix up all of the cotton and knit.

Avoid the matchy-matchy look

Those old-school family photos where everyone’s in the exact same jeans and white shirt are cute in a 90s time-capsule way. Although, I have a sneaky suspicion that's probably not the look you're going for if you ended up here on this blog post. Too much matching can also look really unnatural and forced. Instead, aim for outfits that coordinate without copying each other. Think colors that work well together, not uniforms. That way, each person still feels like themselves, and your images have more depth and life.

A Few More Tips....

Do not forget the shoes

Shoes show up in more photos than you might think. Go for something comfortable that works with your outfits. For men I often suggest a canvas or leather 'casual' sneaker or short dress boots depending on the dressiness of your outfit. Lets avoid running shoes unless they are intentional for the look.

Ask your photographer

This is one of my favorite parts of working with families. Every client who books with me gets personal styling help. I can send you shoppable links, put together an inspiration board, or help you choose between pieces you already own. I know what works with the light, the locations, and the season here in Fort Worth. If you are stuck, send me a couple photos of what you are thinking and I will help you pull it all together.

Layer for Texas weather

October can be 85 degrees or 55 degrees, sometimes in the same week. Choose lightweight layers you can add or take off easily like cardigans, jackets, or scarves that double as accessories.
